Screening

At Big Brothers and Big Sisters our screening process is very thorough and extensive. We do everything possible to make sure the Parent/Guardian of the children we serve will be comfortable with the Big Brother or Big Sister we have selected.

We look for individuals who have a genuine interest in children and helping them reach their full potential through a healthy, nurturing and fun relationship.

When a person enquires about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, they are presented information at the time of the interview. At this time, we discuss our program further and when a person feels they can fulfill all of the expectations, the screening process continues

During the interview, an applicant is required to give us the names and addresses of 3 people we will send a reference form to. This includes a character reference, a family reference and an  employment/volunteer reference. Each applicant also must go, in person, to the police station to be screened by the police. The interview is a fairly in-depth interview starting with where the applicant was born, educational background, social circle and ending with their life goals. We also ask some personal questions regarding such issues as drugs, alcohol, and emotional stability.

Bare in mind that the Parents/Guardians of the children we serve must allow their child to become friends with a "stranger" - which is initially what they are to the family. We understand and appreciate this, which is why our screening process needs to be thorough and extensive.
